If you’re looking for a moderately challenging hike that delivers spectacular mountain scenery, lace up your boots, grab your walking poles and head for Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail. Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes are in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, 137 km (85 mi) southwest of Calgary, an area filled with hiking and recreation opportunities.

Like most lakeside trails, Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail is largely flat. The challenge comes in its distance — circumnavigating the lake is, as they say, a bit of a hike. You’ll cover about 16 km (10 mi).

Of course, you can always pause to admire the scenery and catch your breath. In addition to beautiful views of the lake, the trail offers great vantage points to take in the wonders of Upper Kananaskis Falls and Sarrail Falls. Upper Kananaskis Lake is also popular with anglers looking to hook a big rainbow trout, but a fishing license is required to do so.
